Circuit Abbey Euro-Duino

euroduino_panelEurorack and Arduino. What common may be between a huge analogue rack and a brains for a toy robot? Perhaps it is openness of the both platforms and broad variety of existing solutions based on them. Nowadays it is not something outstanding to use a digital controller inside analog module, but Arduino also is respected for its simple and user-friendly development tools, allowing to create a device doing random tasks for minimum time and money. A couple of years ago Arduino chips had took their place in Eurorack modules. 4ms, Flame use AVR controllers in their products and Soundmachines specifically used Arduino to develop their Robotto and had published an SDK for it.

And now appeared modules that are intended to be programmed by owners. The first one was utility-module Expert Sleepers Disting ($175), based on PIC32MX uC, then Circuit Abbey Euro-Duino ($145), based on Arduino as it comes from the name. The price for the DIY kit of this module is just $95 and it has lots of fun within! So, let’s take a closer look at the module.

Erica Synths Matrix Mixer preliminary

High-tech eurorack module Matrix Mixer by latvian company Erica Synths should appear by the end of July. Module is a hybrid matrix DC-mixer, controlled with 3.2″ touchscreen. Analog part consists of 10 DC-coupled inputs and 8 DC-coupled outputs. The main interface resembles 10×8 Synthi-style matrix with virtual pins, controlled by touches. This pins connect respective input and output with unity gain. it is possible to store up to 256 patches — individual settings, and to create a performances — chains of settings, which can be succeeded by single or pre-defined serie of pulses passed to Clock input.

The price is unknown at the moment.

ACXSynth MIDI2CV Firmware v5.7.3

New version of firmware for ACXSynth MIDI2CV has been released. Firmware is no more alternative. Second run of MIDI2CV comes with this version. New manual is published. Changes:

  • POLY1 and POLY4 modes are swapped.
  • Velocity outputs are added in duophonic modes.

The source code is published. Language: C. Compiler: PICC 9.

Firmware update and the source code can be downloaded on the Project page.

ACXSynth MIDI2CV Firmware v5.7.2

New version of alternative firmware for ACXSynth MIDI2CV has been released. Changes:

  • 8-voice polyphony and polyphonic velocity are now supported. You must have two or more units connected via MIDI-splitter in order to receive identical data. See MIDI Implementation for details.
  • Polyphonic and Monophonic modes now have individual sets of function keys. Store function key is now accessible in any of these modes. See MIDI Implementation for details.

New version can be downloaded on the Project page

ESI Gigaport HD DC-Coupling Mod

There is number of DAW-sequencer plug-ins that can work with control voltages. For example:  Expert Sleepers Silent Way and M.O.T.U. Volta. Also, any specific CV source can be made with SynthEdit, SynthMaker, Pure Data, Max/MSP etc. In order to output CV to a hardware, an audio-interface with DC-coupled analog outputs is required. (Audio-interface should work correctly with direct current) Most of today’s audio-interfaces have protecting HP filters, placed right before analog outputs. These filters let only alternating current to be passed trough (outputs are AC-coupled) and also provide good dynamic range. Few old professional interfaces (MOTU 828 and others) has DC-coupled outputs. Also, Expert Sleepers has the whole range of specialized audio-interfaces and DACs with DC-coupled outputs. These are good interfaces, but a bit expensive.

The ESI Gigaport HD is known as inexpensive, multichannel 24/96-ready USB audio-interface. Out of the box this interface has AC-coupled outputs but circuit can be easily modified to support CV.

ESI Gigaport HD DC-Coupling: CapacitorsThere is eight electrolytic capacitors inside the device: C36, C41, C46…C71 (marked red). All we have to do is to short capacitor’s terminals together. The first option is to solder a jumper wires around each cap. The second option is to insert switches that could toggle DC- or AC-coupling for individual outputs.
ESI Gigaport HD DC-Coupling: Schematic

Finally we got an interface that supports both CV and audio.

Measured specifications

  • Channel number: 8
  • Amplitude: 6v p-p max. (−3…+3 volts)
  • Maximal positive sample value (32767 или 8388607) inverts (Version 3 drivers)!
  • Channel DC cross-talk: <0.03% (<146dB)

Use carefully! Unprotected inputs/outputs are sensitive to low-impedance current sources. Inaccurate connection may cause damage to interface or degrade it’s specs.

SSSR Labs Lissajous Suite

The new subsection is just open on the site: VST-plugins! This subsection contains free VST-plugins by Dmitry Shtatnov made under his brand SSSR Labs. (Solid State Sound Research Labs.). The first plug-ins suite is just uploaded.

Lissajous Suite Logo

Lissajous Suite is a set of VST plug-ins intended for experiments with the graphical representation of the waveforms on an oscilloscope. This media experiment genre is known as Lissajous music.

Some demonstration videos will appear later. The first one shows features of the MIDIHarmonics VST instrument.
